Ingredients

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 quart vegetable oil, for frying
- powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and nutmeg.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and melted butter.
- Combine wet ingredients with the dry ingredients until a dough forms.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Cut the dough into squares and allow them to rest for about 30 minutes.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 360°F (182°C).
- Fry the beignets, a few at a time, until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Remove from oil and drain on paper towels. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
- For best results, make sure the oil is hot enough before frying.
- Beignets are best served fresh on the day they are made.
