Ingredients

- 1 ½ cups warm water
- 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese, cut into cubes
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- coarse salt for topping
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add salt and flour, mixing until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth, about 5 minutes.
- Let the dough rise in a greased bowl for 1 hour, covered.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Divide the dough into equal pieces, flatten, and place a cheese cube in the center, folding the dough over.
- In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda.
- Boil pretzels for about 30 seconds each, then transfer to the baking sheet.
- Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
Notes
- Serve with marinara sauce for dipping.
- You can add herbs to the dough for additional flavor.
