- Bring to a boil and allow it to boil without stirring for about 5 minutes or until a candy thermometer reads 234°F (soft ball stage).
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and nuts if using.
- Beat the mixture with a wooden spoon until it thickens and begins to lose its gloss.
- Pour into a greased 8-inch square pan and let it cool before cutting into squares.
