Description
This KFC gravy copycat recipe delivers the same rich, savory, and smooth flavor as the original—perfect for mashed potatoes, chicken, or biscuits. Made with pantry staples, it’s quick, affordable, and packed with comforting umami flavor.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon powder (or 1 crushed cube)
- 1 teaspoon beef bouillon powder (or 1 crushed cube)
- 2 cups water (or 1 cup chicken broth + 1 cup beef broth)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Whisk in the flour and cook for 2–3 minutes until the mixture is golden and smells nutty.
- Stir in the onion powder, garlic powder, chicken bouillon, and beef bouillon. Let cook for 1 minute.
- Slowly whisk in the water or broth, starting with a small amount to prevent lumps, then gradually adding the rest.
- Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 5–7 minutes, whisking frequently, until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot.
Notes
- Use chicken drippings instead of butter for a richer flavor.
- Add 1–2 tablespoons of cream at the end for a creamier gravy.
- Vegetarian? Use veggie bouillon in place of chicken/beef bouillon.
- For a gluten-free version, substitute the flour with cornstarch slurry (2.5 tbsp cornstarch + 3 tbsp water).
