Description

This Scalloped Potatoes and Ham recipe is the ultimate comfort food, featuring layers of thinly sliced potatoes and savory ham enveloped in a rich, creamy sauce. It’s the perfect dish for using up leftover ham and impressing guests at your next family gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds of thinly sliced potatoes (Russet or Yukon Gold)
  • 2 cups cooked ham, diced
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and thyme to form a roux, cooking for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Gradually add milk while stirring, until the sauce thickens. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Layer half of the potatoes and ham in the baking dish. Pour half of the sauce over the top. Repeat with remaining potatoes, ham, and sauce.
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 60 minutes. Remove foil, sprinkle with cheese (if using), and bake for an additional 15-30 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly.
  6. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a crispier top, broil for the last few minutes.
  • Can be made ahead and reheated, adding a bit more milk if it dries out.
