Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package puff pastry sheets
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Roll out the puff pastry sheets and cut them into equal rectangles.
- Bake the pastry pieces until golden and crisp, about 15-20 minutes.
- Meanwhile, in a saucepan, heat the milk and 1/2 cup of sugar until just simmering.
- In a bowl, whisk together the remaining sugar, flour, and egg yolks until smooth.
- Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking continuously.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook, stirring, until thickened.
- Stir in the vanilla extract and butter until smooth.
- Let the pastry cream cool completely.
- Once the pastry is cool, assemble by layering pastry, cream, and more pastry, finishing with a top layer sprinkled with powdered sugar.
Notes
- For a more indulgent version, add a layer of fresh berries between the cream and pastry.
