Description

Chinese Beef and Onion Stir Fry is a quick and delicious meal featuring tender beef strips, caramelized onions, and a savory umami-packed sauce. Perfect for busy weeknights or as part of a family dinner, this stir fry brings the flavors of takeout to your home kitchen in under 25 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large onion (sliced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 lb (450 g) beef (thinly sliced, e.g., flank steak or sirloin)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (mixed with 2 tablespoons water)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • Green onions (sliced, for garnish)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Beef: Slice the beef thinly against the grain. Marinate with soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper for 15–20 minutes.
  • Heat the Pan: Heat vegetable oil in a wok. Stir-fry the beef in batches for 1–2 minutes until browned. Remove and set aside.
  • Cook the Onions: In the same pan, cook the sliced onions for 2–3 minutes until caramelized.
  • Add Garlic and Combine: Add minced garlic, stir for 30 seconds, then return the beef to the pan. Add remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, and cornstarch slurry. Stir until the sauce thickens.
  • Final Touches: Garnish with green onions and serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

  • Marinating the beef ensures tenderness.
  • Adjust the sauce’s thickness by altering the cornstarch slurry ratio.
  • Add chili flakes or ginger for extra spice and flavor.
